We wear the mask
When daylight hits we rise with our eyes closed from the familiar comfort of white sheets,
Our feet hit the cold floor and it feels as if the world is dropped from a million miles high onto our brittle backs.
Eyes still sealed we reach for the mask on the back of the door, the engraved smile feels sharp on our fingers.
Placing the mask on our face, we sigh, stumble out the door, and face yet another routine day of painted pretty faces;
Mimes configuring a hidden message while standing in a glass box.
When the black sky returns we pray it will stay eternally,
the masks become too much to handle.
The masks hang back on the door as we crawl into bed,
We are tired. We are lost.
12 AM and we cry, we scream, we kick, why does it have to be this way?
1 AM we consider unzipping our veins
2 AM the sheets are stained red
3 AM and sleep has still not found its way to our eyes
3:30 AM the mask shatters into pieces on the floor
4 AM maybe it would be easier if it was dark forever
4:27 AM "I'm sorry"
4:32 AM "

The author's comments:
This poem was written about the very real problem of teen mental health issues. It is sad that mental health issues are beginning to be seen as more of a trend and less of a problem, and I wanted to show just how serious these issues are in hopes to call attention to them in order for help to become available to those who need it.
