The Hollow Crown
She walked with a grace
Not yet known to the human race.
Her steps filled with determination
About to lead an entire nation.
As she took the scepter and crown
All her worries came crashing down.
She sat upon her newfound throne,
A veritable prison she might have known.
She left her girlish self behind
And emerged a woman, ready to find
All the adventures life had in store
That would make her into a figure of lore.
But the darkness to her light,
Would render her unable to fight.
A betrayal that she could not see,
And a queen she could not be.
All these troubles made her rise,
Made her value what was wise.
And, yet, she had to pay the price,
Had to finally roll the dice.
Tied to a cross, burnt at the stake,
Sacrificing herself for her country’s sake.
She could die, her time could expire
If her people, she could inspire
But, even though she lost in the end,
She found exactly what she had to defend.
A life of freedom and of rights,
A life of ending all such fights.
Because, and this she finally saw,
She was required to uphold the law.
Not the code written by selfish kings,
Only the code that virtue brings.
