"I wonder how many people I've looked at all my life and never seen." -John Steinbeck

It used to be so effortless
Standing there in her favorite dress
She loved the reflection staring back at her
from the full length mirror.
But times have passed
And now she is the age of 14
With 25 pounds gained
And the depression as a 50 ton weight.
Her ego so fragile, her self consciousness strong,
Fueled by the petty comments of her peers.
With the years came self hatred
And so the war with herself begun.
She wouldn't touch her dinner plate.
Even the weight loss wasn't enough to make her feel beautiful again
As it turns out nothing ever was enough
As she stood in the same dress as before
The fabric now sagging from her bony shoulders
She counted her ribs
And ran her fingers throughout her frail body
But all she could think;
What she died thinking
Was that she was fat.

The author's comments:
People never seem to talk about problems like anorexia openly. I think we are forgetting that anorexia is an actual sickness. Society seems to make anorexia out as attention seeking or just a phase that teenagers go through. But in reality, anybody can have it at any age and either gender. It's not something to be ashamed or embarrassed about. I wrote this for readers to acknowledge that they aren't alone in this. It's ok to talk about it.
