"Lead me, follow me, or get out of my way!" -General George S. Patton

The excited boy waits
with pen in hand
to sign the papers
to make him a man

The recruiter points
to a few different spots
and the excited boy signs
with a few ink blots

Next thing he knew
he was shipped to a base
where they trained him to fight
and they saw his war face

Then after that
they sent him away
to a place where he
would fight for freedom each day

It was blistering hot
but he didn’t complain
nor did he whine
when it started to rain

He stood at his post
with rifle in hand
and along with his brethren
he defended that land

They guarded the people
they controlled bad upheaval
they spread liberty
and they routed out evil

One morning this young man
was out on patrol
he ran into enemies
who ruined his stroll

The man did his best
to stand his ground
but his evil adversaries
sent him down, down, down

His comrades then found him
defended him fast
but the young man sadly
breathed his last

He came home in a casket
covered with a flag
his grief stricken parents
cried into their rags

This young man died defending freedom
that you live with each day
Be sure to honor others like him
salute the flag today

I wrote this poem for English as homework. I had no idea how it would turn out, but the words and ideas just kept flowing, so I kept writing!
