The Ultimate Match
As I hit the ball back and forth with my opponent
Bouncing the fuzzy yellow ball three times before every serve,
Counting the number of balls hit between the two of us
Drawing my game plan in my head.

Everyone stares and watches my match,
For I am the only one left playing.
Growing more nervous after every single point
Hoping that I will be the one to come up on top.

Intriguing points as the match is high quality
Jumping up and down after a great point.
Kicking myself after every point I lose
Losing is all in the mind, not by the skill of a player.

My ability and my mind are two different things
Nobody can stop me from wanting to win
Obviously nobody wants to lose
Placing the balls to make sure that they do not go out.

Quad is the tournament that my team is in
Relying on me to win us the final match
Since we are tied with the other school
This match will decide the winning school.

Under the sky the match continues
Victory will be mine as I hit my final shot
Winning the quad for my team felt amazing,
Exactly how I had pictured it in mind.

Yelling in excitement
Zipping up my black jacket as I leave
And my team leaves with happy faces as we had just won.

The author's comments:
Dear Teen Ink editors,
Please consider my poem “The Ultimate Match” for publication in a future issue of Teen Ink.
My name is Michael and I take a creative writing class. My favorite kinds of writings are poems because they interest me and are fun to write. This is my first piece of writing that I am submitting to a publisher. I love to read mysteries and sports stories because those are the two things that interest me with their action and tension. Tennis is my favorite sport, so I wanted to write a poem about one of the matches that I had. I really enjoy reading teen ink as my class reads them in class from time to time. Thank you for taking the time to read my poem and considering it for publication.
Thank you for your consideration and time.
Sincerely,
Michael
