Purple Rain. Purple rain rains down on souls.
Souls, holding shields and wearing
puzzled looks on their faces,
one brow up and the other down.
Surrounded, surrounded by
gargantuan monstrosities of mankind
with holes, holes in an array
so that the beast could be seen
from the outside in.

The hatred that we hoard
in our very blood
weighs down upon us.
We shield our faces and avert our eyes,
instead of standing up,
looking face to face
with our shadowed reflection
and lighting it up.
we try to go through it
taking the shorter way out
Drenched, drenched in the
tonic of the devil we become.
So if forever we wish to bear
the burden of a dark heart,
so be it.
But let me just say,
with all eyes on me,
the clouds shall part,
the sun shall smile,
a lighter time is coming.

Dear Teen Ink,
Please consider my poem “Purple Rain” for publication in a future issue of “Teen Ink” Magazine.

I chose “Teen Ink” to submit my work because I really like reading your poetry because it is interesting and beautiful. I am in a Creative Writing class and have discovered that I really enjoy reading and writing free verse poetry. I love to read poetry in your magazine; there are so many interesting and beautiful poems that I will remember forever. I wrote this ekphrastic free verse poem because, like I said, I really like writing about what pops into my mind. I looked at a picture called “Purple Rain” and immediately wrote about what I felt. The picture included some people walking with umbrellas in a square in a city, surrounding by buildings, and being pounded on by purple rain.

Thank you for your consideration and time. I hope my poem can be featured in the next issue of “Teen Ink.”
