The trees, once green, lose
Precious leaves as winds
Cast them into vast fields
Of golden grass.

The river, once slow, flows
Faster than before, carries
Pebbles and twigs to fields
Of golden grass.

The sky, once blue, turns
To red and rust, honors
Soldiers fallen into fields
Of golden grass.

The pastel, “A Break in the Clouds,” by California artist, David D. Hunt in 2005, inspired this poem.

The author's comments:
I had the privilege of viewing a gallery of California artist David D. Hunt, who focuses primarily on nature scenes. Since I have spent many weeks in nature and developed a love for it, I was drawn to his work, particularly the pastel credited above as the inspiration for my poem. For fellow writers, I hope they will begin to think more about the use of other art forms to inspire them to write. For all readers, I hope my poem will help them deepen their understanding the horror of war that destroys so many beautiful things and people.
