"Pretend it’s real,"
says he, flashing a
sharp smile.
"Pretend the warmth in
your chest
is love.
Pretend the lightness in
your head
is relief.”
Sad, empty
eyes
stare back at me.
It is then that I forget everything
I know
about credit cards and
friendship.
I take
his hand
for the thousandth time and,
for the thousandth time,
I am consumed by his
smile.
