one. two. three.
they come down fast
like rain drops.
i do not wince.
four.
a pause.
a clap of thunder.
five. six. seven.
lightning shoots
behind my eyes.
i bite hard
until i taste copper.
i remember a story
of a boy who
bit his tongue off
because he could not
feel pain.
i am jealous.
i am guilty.
eight. nine.
steady, boy, woah.
i suppress the scream
bubbling inside of me.
ten.
the final rule-
do not scream.
never scream.
