The Hand of God
explodes 16 billion light years
away from our little town,

grasping the empty molecules
that we’ve yet to infiltrate.
I wonder how many deaths it will take

to settle these ancient disputes
that we gore with false familiarity.
Our shadows tremble in the darkness.

Leave your epitaphs at home—
chemical bile will simply wash them away.
Our children haven’t the time for sympathy.

Go on, cauterize the knowledge that will
save us all, but just remember:
we have reached the final degree.

I saw a picture of a "celestial object" called the Hand of God, and it spurred some kind of angst and existentialism out of me, which I hope this poem will spin out of you, too.
