I’m waking up with a new spell,
a charm to free me from the chains
that have often scarred my battling arms
with red, blistered constraint.

I’m adding a pinch of revelation
to my new potion of liberty.
A dash of boldness and a speck of valor,
it erases the trail of captivity.

I’ll dig out my lace tights from the closet.
I’ll parade them ‘round town on my thighs.
The spirit of adventure will surround me
as my escape alarms a sweet warning.

I’ll dream of myself as I bathe my bare toes
in mossy, pure mud straight from cosmos.
As I scrape dirt and twigs on my newly-born knees,
The hail of freedom will follow beside me.

Then I’ll make my way to the city,
scamper across each strained, bright green lawn.
Pedestrians may cross from the sidewalk
fearing something—someone—so unknown.

The housewives will hide behind their ironing boards
as my promenade struts past their pens.
They’ll restrain their limping, glum hair in clamps,
and my snarling curls will fly past.

And as for if I’m thrown in jail,
I’ll hardly bat an eye.
I’ll blow a kiss to older days,
days of shallow blindness and fright.

I’ll wave goodbye when I’m locked up,
to times I knew, now passed.
When I was afraid of losing myself
and kept my soul detached.

For behind these bars, I’m unstoppable.
I have my unveiled magic.
I’ve discovered a spell that can't be un-cast
and from now on, forever
I’m free

This poem portrays a lifestyle that I, as a modern-day teenager burdened by stereotypes and other pressures, aspire to reach someday.
