The Stages of Life
First, you’re a child in elementary school,
Practicing reading, math, science and history all day long,
But come afternoon you’re bullied,
Wishing you could be big and strong.
Then you’re a teenager in high school,
After a hard break up,
Searching for the perfect song,
Wondering how everything you had could have gone all wrong.
Now you’re a young adult,
Fresh off the college campus and into the New York streets,
Making your way through the crowded throng,
And after a long workday in the busy business office,
All the noise just bangs in your head like a Chinatown gong.
Next, you find yourself middle aged,
When the stray gray hairs start to show,
And your life is like a mirage; you can’t tell what’s real and what’s just a blur in your mind,
The time slipping away like the final quiet notes of a song.
Finally you’re an elder,
Starting to feel the wear of age,
Reminiscing on the days when you felt your strength was equal to King Kong,
And you start to realize you’re becoming more dependent on others,
As the days grow long.
Now the end draws near,
With the cool night air,
In that darkening place under the deep twilight sky,
Alight with thousands of stars,
You close your eyes,
And then,
You’re gone.
