I Looked For You
I looked for you.
 I did it on the earth and in the rocks.
 I did it in the depths of the sea
 and in the crests of its waves.

 I looked for you in letters
 and in old photographs;
 in the length of the streets
 and in the breadth of its cracks.

 I went up to the mountains
 and looked at the stars.
 I walked among trees and checked in the green of its leaves
 and in the length of its arms.

 I looked for you in the books you read
 and in the songs you heard.
 I did it in your school,
 among your family and friends.

 I did it in comments
 and visions that people had of you.
 I ignored opinions and looked for you in the air.

 In your notes I looked for you;
 among the lines that you wrote,
 and the songs that you composed.
 And that is where I found you.
