Cigarette

You were just like those cigarettes you smoked
I knew you were bad for me
But just like your cigarettes I kept coming back for more.
One a day
Then two
Then six
I moved up to a pack a day
And then two
How naïve I was to continue to inhale
But I was addicted
And you were so easy
So easy it came natural
“Why stop there?”
Like smoke you danced on my lips
My stomach
My thighs
You were so easy
You made it feel easy
So I inhaled
I wonder if you made him feel the same
I wonder if you made him as hooked as I
Was he?
Outside I smoke a cigarette
With the air as cold as your sudden abandonment
I flip the carton over
Reading
“Smoking causes lung cancer, heart disease, emphysema…”
But they failed to warn that
Cigarettes cause heartache too

I went through a pretty rough break-up of sorts with an ex. This is the hate-baby that came from it.
