When you feel like you're about to let go
they tell you to keep your head above water.
But what if you wanted to let go?
To sink beneath the surface
likes a pebble sinking to the bottom
of an abyss.
You wanted to float to the bottom.
You wanted the seaweed to entangle
itself around your body.
You wanted the smooth pebbles to
lick your body.

You wanted to watch as the light of
the sun became darker and hidden
like an alley.
The time you weren't going to reach
out and grasp the sun's hand.
The time you were going to let the blue water trace is bony fingers
delicately across your body.
Feeling the water tickle your
face and lighten your body.

You were tired of trying to
stay afloat like a helpless toy.
Your arms moving forward and
back around in aimless circles.
Never to move through the
water to meet land.
But, finally you are consumed
as a searing pain strikes your lungs.
You don't fight it as the last air
bubble escapes your mouth.
But, for the first time
you can breathe.
