Mommy and Daddy
I used to love the way
Mommy looked at Daddy
with that shiny sparkle in her eye.
I used to love the way
Daddy told Mommy corny jokes to make her laugh
because no one could make her laugh that hard.
I used to love the way
Mommy always cooked Daddy’s favorite food
every Friday night.
I used to love the way
Daddy kissed Mommy
every day when he came home.
But things change,
and I’ve come to learn that good things never last.
I hated the way
Mommy and Daddy shouted at each other late at night.
I hated the way
Daddy watched Mommy cry as he yelled at her,
and he didn’t wipe the tears away like he did before.
I hated the way
Mommy and Daddy barely looked at each other when they spoke,
and Mommy lost that shiny sparkle in her eye.
I hated the way
Daddy grabbed Mommy so furiously whenever they argued.
I absolutely hated the way
Mommy and Daddy separated,
and left me stuck in between.
Mommy found someone else,
to make her laugh really hard,
someone else who brought back that sparkle in her eye.
Daddy found someone new,
to kiss every day when he came home,
who could cook all his favorite foods.
I miss the way
Mommy and Daddy loved each other.
But as I’ve come to learn,
good things never last.
