weddings and coffee mugs
she made a noise in her sleep and i lowered the volume so it wouldn't bother her
the song is some duet with a lazy strum that makes me want to dance like the old couples do at their grandchildren's weddings
if i have a wedding i'd want to walk down the aisle with a bouquet of dandelions so they could dance in the breeze and land on my little sister's nose
she'd probably be going into eighth grade and maybe she'd have dyed hair and piercings but i hope she'd treat mama right because i never did and she still picked me up from the sleepover and made me tea when i cried
i hope not too many people would be there because then i'd get lonely
wait maybe that's the wrong thing to say i don't know
i hope he has a nice laugh and long fingers but i want him to have a lot of tiny quirks because then when we're making pancakes and he tells me i'm burning them i can tease him
like maybe his socks are always mismatched or he always forgets his keys or he mumbles silly things into my ear in his sleep or he never washes his mug so that the coffee stains are permanently imprinted in it even though i try to scrub them off
and even though we love dim places we'll have a wedding somewhere bright and the sun will shine through the big windows of our studio that's somewhere where the stars poke through the smoke and the grass gets dewy overnight
and i'll wake up early and make him breakfast so that when he wakes up right before noon he won't have to put the kettle on the stove even though i like watching him drink his coffee
holding the mug with one ink-stained hand
