The sun shines on the shore of a distant land,
liberated long ago by brave men from afar.
Where they fought and died in the sand;
they died like the brave soldiers they are.

One man survived the bullet rain,
one of the lucky many
who lived to retell the stories of their pain.
The Greatest Generation if there was any.

After many, many years
two brothers – two of a survivor’s sons
return to the vast beach, eyes wet with tears
to give tribute that will see the setting of many suns.

They kneel on the windy shore
digging a final trench in the dirt
to bury a hero’s regalia of war,
thus giving thanks for all his suffering and hurt.
