Sometimes, it is the thing we cannot conquer
That we admire the most.

It is to the tallest mountain
That has not been climbed
That evokes a toast.

It is the deer we cannot catch
That we most ardently wish to roast.

It is the indomitable race
That sends us to the starting post.

It is the woman who won’t give the time of day
That we wish to host.

Not simply because its dominion allows us to boast.

Oh no! More simply, it is our inabilities that strangely keep us
Searching from coast to coast,

For that simple little thing
That will not easily succumb
To even our best and our most.

As a junior and upcoming senior, my school requires me to write an Extended Essay on a particular subject that we admire the most. For some peculiar reason I chose to write my 4,000 word essay on the subject of Math. Now, I love math as much as the next guy, but it's always been my worst subject. Strangely, it seemed that my inability to conquer those math problems lead me to build a stronger appreciation for that which I can't defeat. The situation made me realize that we gain a bunch of admiration and respect for those things that seem indivisible or too powerful for us to defeat.
