Panic! At the Desk
The hot stench of failure
Filters through my lungs
They won’t expand
My eyes burn
Blood floods from my fingers to my heart
Like the mass exodus before a hurricane
Calm, glassy eyes watch the clock
The air is thin
My vision blackens
My veins constrict
I can feel the blood from my overworked heart
Seeping through my skin
A stain grows on my t-shirt
Hot, wet, sticky
A shameful, burning red
I grit my teeth
Put my head down
“This too shall pass”
The words escape through my lips
Rough, bitter, overused
Dear God, it must
One day I’ll be but stardust
