I am from
I am from the warmth of a wool blanket on a frosty autumn night
From the softness of the dancing green grass under the endless blue sky
From freshly baked buns and a hot cup of milk tea
From the joy of nomads who have just survived the winter
I am from mom’s vanilla perfume, dad’s morning cologne and the family photo hanging above my bed
From the forest’s strawberry bushes and walnut trees, and countless sneezes from daisies
I am from horse racing with my uncle and bike rides down gravel hills
From bruised knees and ripped dresses
From three siblings whom I would take a bullet for
I am from tears of joy and tears of sorrow
I am from walking my dog, and rushing back before the rain
From never carrying an umbrella, because secretly I loved the touch of soft rain droplets
I am from the loss of my nephew, from crying in the shower
I am from “respect your elders”, “share with your brother” and “do the right thing even if no one’s watching”
I am from ancient Mongol warriors who conquered half the world
I am from a tradition that will conquer the whole of your heart
I am from the city, from the countryside and from my parents’ love
I am from mistakes and memories
From my grandma’s loving eyes, shining like bright stars
I am from never looking back, because I’m only moving forward
I am who I always wanted to be.
