Aging
Theres an old house with a barn by it
Aging and rundown like the man inside it
Looking at it
no one would even notice
but there are so many memories there
A grandfather holds his first grandchild
his second
his third
In that time more paint chips
and theres more broken boards
the seasons change
the childrens hair darkens with age
From a distance it seems dull
but there's life there everyday
Every sunday
in the early summers heat
the children run and play
until the smell of grandma's homemade meals
lures them inside
The table fills with people
children sneak food before prayers
the grandpa uncaring of the childrens roaring noise
until the death announcements come on the radio
He looks out the window with sad blue eyes
remembering friends who lost their lives
but then continues to smile and say
“I guess I didn’t die today”
In time the grandparents move out
and soon after that the death announcements mention him
the house a lonely building no one cares about
everything about it slowly fades
except the memories within
