The Perpetual Tide
My family
is the sea.
Unreachable
and yet eternal,
omnipresent.
I am
the shore.
Near enough to touch
remote enough to ignore
continually waiting
Waves of anger
eddies of peace.
The shore knows
the sea
and yet,
the sea is permanent
only in its impermanence.
On a clear day,
without winds or weather
the sea and the shore
are inseparable.
On dark days,
the sea loathes the shore
mortal enemies
without hope of peace.
The shore lies awaiting
the inevitable storm
no escape or respite
from the pulsing fury
of the insatiable surf.
And yet
the shore and the sea
are unable and unwilling
to ever truly part.
