Waiting for Santa
Every year on this very day
I lay sleepless in my cold dark room
Waiting endless for morning to come
What surprise will the sunrise bring?
I heard a noise, I slow my breath
Listening with all my strength
Until all I can hear is nothing and everything
Going on around me this Christmas Eve
Who could be up?
The light fills my room from under the door
It makes shadows teasing me to take a peak
Sneaking down from my bed as quiet as I can be
Creating a crack in the door
Looking out beyond the hall
Where is Santa Claus?
Walking down the hall with hope
That Santa’s just a few steps close
Peering down from the stairs only to see
Not Santa but my parents bring up gifts
I stop and stare and so do my parents asking
“Can you help us bring these up? And make sure your quiet for your siblings”
In that moment that’s when I knew that Santa wasn’t coming.
