Surrounded
I have walked along beaches
Where the moon sets on the water
And I know what it’s like to say
 Goodnight to the world

 As the sea waves goodnight
I stand with just my toes in the water
And as the night descends upon me,
I am surrounded by the world

 And in the solemn darkness
I am reminded of how bright the stars are
How a stiff evening breeze, gently plays in the palm leaves
The urge to sleep fades, and your Goosebumps perk up
You would simply rather just sit and feel it on your skin

And as I lay in bed on nights like that
I want nothing more than to stay there forever
To feel the moonlight shimmer on my skin
Enjoy the sea spray that coats my whole body

Or be up in the Smokey Mountains
Watching the whole mountain sway with the breeze
Feeling every pine needle brush against the wisps of wind
And your whole body smiles, and it oozes out onto your mouth

 Next thing you know though,
You are standing in your driveway
Waiting for the school bus on Monday
And that smile fades faster than the hope that
Somehow, maybe you got a snow day at the last minute

But now, I crave the feeling of
 Cheap bus leather
And the crisp morning breeze of a
Michigan Morning on my smiling face

Because it means I get to see you today
I get to see the most beautiful girl in the world
I get to see you today
School is merely a free pass to be around you

So even though I absolutely loath my second hour
I can’t get enough of it, because it means I’m one hour closer to lunch with you
It means that my day is a third over, and that 5th hour
Is less than 4 hours away.
 The hour when you
Come out as a shining star
How ten kids can read what they have
 Then you raise your hand

Everyone is unsuspecting of what may happen
 But I know it’s coming, I know it’s there
Your words looming under the tender surface of your skin
They are ready and waiting for the opportunity to explode out
Tearing through the crowds of innocent onlookers that
Thought they were just getting to hear some other story

But what happens is you reach into their hearts
 With fingers made of verses
 Hands made of stanzas
And you open your world to them

You tell them how it is for a girl
 That stands in your shoes
With her beautiful hair covering half of her face
Part of it goes over your eyes
 But you see so clearly
And you paint a picture with words
That no colors can ever fill in,
Or live up to what you have said

 When you read your words
Your voice is stronger than the Smokey Mountains
And your breath blows through our ears
Like the wind plays in the pines

 You are beautiful and incredible
You are curious like a midnight sunset on the beach
Because as the moon sits on the water,
 My body wants to sleep
 But your beautiful light,
Cast upon me by everything you do,
 The words you say,
 The way you act
 The way you smile
The way you head butt me
 The way you trust me
 I am illuminated by everything

And I don’t want to say goodnight to you
I want to the world to sit up with me
 As I lay in bed
Eyes fixated on the ceiling above my head
But my mind captured by your sweet words
Held in your soft, scarred hands
And I am surrounded by you
