the branch floating in the sky
I bolt outside
As fast as my little legs will take me
Around the tree, across the corner
That’s three arms-lengths wide.
I run around ‘til I fall
Crashing to the warm ground
The grass is a pillow
On my soft, sweet skin.
My head on the ground
My shoes in the air
I look up at the branch
Floating in the sky.
I will reach that someday
My little heart said
I will reach that someday.
One day there was a storm
That was so loud
And so windy
That it knocked down the branch
Floating in the sky.
No, I wasn’t sad.
No, I didn’t cry.
All I knew
Was that I finally reached the branch
Floating in the sky.
Now I bolt outside
As fast as my big legs will take me
Around the tree, across the corner
That’s one and a half arms-lengths wide.
I walk around ‘til I see the bus
Pulling to the end of the street
The grass is a pillow
On my worn-out shoes.
My shoes on the ground
My head in the air
I look up where the branch
Once floated in the sky.
Now I just smile
As I look at the empty space
Because now I know
That my storm is over
And that I finally reached the branch
Floating in the sky.
