An Ode to my Friends

Speeding through life in my rusting Chevy

A car full of adolescents

unburdened by the doubts of adulthood

but burdened all the same

I pass the Black and Mild

exhale my inhibitions

with you all by my side

suddenly unafraid

pass the bottle of whatever was cheap

going nowhere with absolute purpose

conversation with no underlying reason

laughter with no effort

no need to paint a smile

a breath of fresh air in this polluted fish bowl of a town

cram my troubles in a drawer and slam it shut

for now we're okay

bare foot and horn headed, together we ARE divinity

with our middle fingers up and the windows down

taking life like a shot of Dimitri

but how else can you take it?

eating bulls*** three times a day leaves your breath smelling like angst

nowhere to go but up, right?

so pass the chillum

because right now responsibility only wears your promise ring

and once I drop you all off

I'll cozy up comfortably in a bed of words we've already said songs we've already listened to

rest my head squarely on a pillow of familiarity

and dream of change...

all the while ignorant of knowing that we are freer now that we will ever be

I am currently a freshman in college right now but I wrote this when thinking back to high school. When you read it have that mindset. Thanks!
