I Hear Winter Singing

I hear winter singing, the varied carols I hear
Those of leaves , each one signing brown as it should be dead and withered.
The children signing theirs as they play in the snow or ice.
The elves singing theirs as they make ready for St. Nicholas, as he leaves off for Christmas,
The manager singing what belongs to him in his store, the cashier singing on the register,
The old man singing as he sits on his bench, the young man singing as he walks,
The ax-men’s song, the hunters on his way in the morning, or at dawn or at sundown.
The happy singing of the teacher, or of the young student at home, or of the principal, or coach.
Each singing what belongs to him or her and to none else,
The season what belongs to the season--at christmas eve the panic of procrastinating shopper
Singing with open mouths their strong melodious songs.
