Caged Animal

A caged animal.
Is that what I am to you?
Without my consent, you've kept me locked up ever since I was born.
You always try to shape me to the way you wanted.
You punish me when I do something you deemed as bad.
You praise me when I do something you deemed as good.

You give me these expectations.
How great, amazing, and wonderful I would be.
If, I follow you're every word.

You talk about the things of what I would do when I'm free.
But you never let me go.
It never actually crossed your mind to let me go.
Is it because you're afraid?
Of me finding my own dreams?
Of me making my own choices?
Of me finally being able to live?

I know you mean well.
You think that providing me food and shelter,
I would be able to survive.
But surviving is not the same as living.

So let me go.
I want to chase my own dreams, not yours.
If you don't.
I would do the same to my children.
Keep them as my own caged animals.
So let me go.
Mom. Dad.

The author's comments:
My parents have always been overprotective of me. So much that I couldn't make friends without them judging every move they make. So this poem was made when I felt trapped, and hopeless, wanting them to let me have even a little bit of freedom.
