Always and Forever
Blonde hair shone as little legs toddled
She had to like me
My heart swelled as I watched her
She had to like me
This little being that barged into my life
“Over here, Joelle!” I begged, making my throat ache
Rough carpet dug at my knees as I shuffled into her line of sight
Trying to get closer to the toddler in the yellow dress
Repeated rejection stung my heart
She hated me
Had smiles for everyone else but
She hated me
A sour taste clung to my teeth
Tears streaked down my face
My inflamed heart deflated in defeat
Shame pulled my head to my knees
Chubby little arms wrapped around me
Giggles drifted into my ears
Tear filled green eyes peered into laughing baby blue
Crushing her to me, my soul sang with joy
She loved me
She liked everyone else but
She loved me
Just as it should be
Always and forever
