I trace your protruding jaw line with the tips of my fingers
as the sun shines through the blinds on the window.
Treasuring these sacred moments while I can, knowing they will
leave and become distant.
You’ll drag them with you miles away from me
to a new town surrounded by unknown faces.
They will find it hard to peel their eyes off of you, keeping them
daydreaming about your quiet nature and reluctance to show emotion.
Trying to read you like a never-ending book written in a foreign language.
Slowly, one person will break through the cover,
becoming fluent in your words and deciphering each secret code.
Allowing her to crack a smile on your face by simply moving your dark hair.
She’ll need your attention like a drug that is heavily addictive with no therapy,
leaving her dazed and helpless each time your changing hazel eyes fall upon her.
She’ll learn how it is nearly impossible to become your most important prescription of the day.
Withdrawals making you beg for her voice to reach out to you.
You’ll drift away to sleep entwined and tangled allowing her
to outline your structured chin as the sunlight bursts through the shades
all as I once did.
