The Smiles of Lost Souls
The smiles of lost souls
We pass by in the halls,
The stairways,
The sidewalks in a city that feels broken to us
They see us every day
Yet, still no one knows
Still no one looks deeper
How could they know though?
We live a lie
Masking the pain
Searching frantically,
Behind every book case,
Inside every couch,
We dig for it until our arms are noodles,
and our legs jello.
We try to find what we lost
We try to find ourselves,
All the while,
Pretending to be who we once were
Pretending isn’t enough anymore though
We are desperate
We are tired.
We are so alone.
So very alone.
Our only company is the voices,
They knock on our door
They lurk in the shadows
They whisper our names
Why can’t the people hear the voices too?
We are so alone.
No one knows.
