Ode to my Bed
The soft rustle of linen sheets echoes around the room.
The duvet lays open, welcoming you into a kind embrace
Onto that one feather pillow
Tucked into cool cloth.
Crisp and Clean
Smooth and tranquil
The perfect insomnia remedy.
It is your queen,
Or king,
Even the twin you never wanted.
It’s warmth, the way it invites you in
The way it is painful to leave its soft, comfy skin.
Like a friend it waits, offering comfort in the saddest times
Absorbing inmost fears and the drool on your cheek.
Only it knows how nice you really are before your first steaming cup of 4-shot espresso
And your mind’s last reflection after the stars are on full view.
It’s the one who freshens you up like a shiny new penny
Who puts optimism into your eyes to tackle a new day.
As each day passes, it waits for you like clockwork
But there are more hours for light and business and haste
Than there are for beds.
We all need a kingdom of ease, one to sweep us off our feet
To escape the ruthless world
To step into comfort and familiarity.
You live because of it.
Without its gifts you would slowly decay.
You hope that when your hands are wrinkled and the soles on your Shoes of Life have worn through
That when you take your last breath before departing on your last journey
You will be cradled by its warmth.
