Mona Lisa

She speaks, yet she says nothing
A mystery unraveled beneath her smile
An artwork, like an unsolved case
She’s poised; of this there’s no denial

Her eyelids plunge in,
Dark shadows above her eyes
The grainy texture of her cracked skin,
Like a porcelain doll in disguise

Her thin curls bounce off her shoulders,
Taking on a life of their own
Her protruding cheeks
Underlined by her caved in bone

Mountains fade into the distance
Covered by a dark, yellow sky
A beam of light shines onto her face,
Never bright enough to show what she hides

This was an assignment in my Creative Writing class to write a poem about a piece of art. I chose the Mona Lisa because there was so much mystery there and I loved writing about it.
