Fun fuchsia, red velvet, precious pink
Tiny plastic cylinders line my shelf
Where gold trophies once resided

Today I like the one
Colored like the inside of a dragon fruit
It feels like a veil,
Fills my nose with the scent of toasted sugar

Yesterday I wore plum
So rich that you'll think it's butter
The pigments are unforgiving:
They raise their eyebrows at you

Tomorrow I will wear the lustrous one
A pasty cotton candy
A pop of princess that
Of course smells like rose

Perhaps the painting of my lips
Is like the title of a book cover
Or a final sequin to a dress
Or a gift from Venus
Or maybe a sad compensation
A kiss of lipstick instead

The author's comments:
This piece starts out sounding self-indulgent and almost rather shallow, but it is soon revealed that wearing lipstick is a way for the reader to distract from love.
