Nighthawks

It was a timeless evening,
The sun had gone down and wasn’t coming up.
Empty stores and lifeless windows sang a lonely tune,
Yet the forgotten diner resuscitated the night.

The patrons were dressed for the party that never was.
Pretending their coffees were cocktails,
They stirred the elixirs,
Wistfully wishing for a brighter day.

Little conversation was made.
They were all strangers to each other,
And would most likely stay strangers to each other.
However, they found peace within one another.

It seemed the scene was frozen in time,
However, it didn’t matter.
The clock hands never moved.
No one noticed.

An ekphrastic poem is a response to or an analysis of a piece of art through words. "Nighthawks" is best read when juxtaposed with the painting, which can be found by searching the internet for 'Nighthawks by Edward Hopper.'
