Things to Do while Waiting for Sleep
Look at the ceiling. See the light off the moon reflect of the paint.
Listen to your brother playing his harmonica. Ignore it.
Look at the computer, whose lights flash, on, off, on, off.
Count the seconds. Count anything that comes to mind.
Sheep, words, even whales. Listen to your stomach rumble,
perhaps you should have eaten more. Pull out a journal.
Jot down some notes. Maybe even write a poem or two.
Look at the sky. Look at the stars. Look at the vast empty space
and wonder why are you here? See the moon, the shadows it casts.
Then close the blinds and tread in the shadows. Let your mind be.
Let it rest. Close your eyes and accept you are who you are.
See the infinite darkness that awaits you. Don’t shy away, look.
Move deeper and deeper. Closer and closer. Till it surrounds you.
Then look up at the sky as it is now. Marvel at its simplicity.
Realize that so long as you have it, you are never alone, and sleep.
