The Only Hero Left
He sat at the side of the bed, told the setting sun to watch over her head
He let her sleep, tucked in her porcelain feet
He took out of her hair the pearly white bow
And blew in her ear so she didn't hear the drunken voice below.
He invited the dragonflies awhile ago, late, they fly in the open window
With their needlepoint tails they sew up her eyes, the cuts on her wrists and thighs
Their wings flutter goodbye, they pack their thread and hum 'til they're dead
He kisses the roses on her cheeks puts bells on her feet
But he doesn't say 'I love you' for he knows, oh he knows
She won't hear him with the muffled slur of the drunken voice below.
So he slept on her chest and forgot the rest
He closed his eyes to memorize the beat of her butterflies
Entwined with her, he let himself sleep so her broken pieces he could keep
Her hands sprouted roots as she ran her fingers through his hair, never wanting him to go
He let's himself sleep so he doesn't hear her weep when she recognizes the drunken voice below.
