"I'd rather be hated for who I am, than loved for who I am not." - Kurt Cobain

I am afraid of the unknown.
No matter how hard I try, I can’t seem to embrace it.
But how could I, its human nature to be afraid of what we can’t know.

Sometimes I look in the mirror and think.
I think about what the world would be like without my presence.
Some would miss me, others wouldn’t be affected.
Would they remember my soul?
Or would I become another lost treasure.
I simply do not know.

What if the blue blood flowing through my veins,
Turned to ruby red drops on the porcelain?
Would they remember the girl once full of life?

If my skin turned lifeless pale,
Would they remember my natural color?
Or would I be forever snow white in their minds.

If my belongings were burned,
Would they remember how I spent my days?
Or would they forget about my values?

If I was forever muted,
Would they remember the sound of my laugh?
Or would I become another monotone memory?
I simply do not know.

I was inspired to write this piece, because of the thoughts that us teenagers sometimes can’t help but think. We never know what happens after death, and we can’t, until it’s our time to pass on. The narrator of this poem is thinking of various ways to die (ex: suicide, fire) and wondering if she’d be remembered the same way once she’d passed on. She’s also thinking about negative changes that could happen (becoming mute after an accident), and wondering if people would give her a chance, or forget about her and her personality. I wrote this poem to make people think, and give them the perspective of a curious teenager.
