You etched your spine
on galileo’s stars, pressed
your face to
stained-glass angels, sang
and your throat burned constellations
wept
and hoped nobody listened

Whispered your name
to countless ocean breaths, scarred
your initials
to my canvas, a blaze
of color and kisses and tears
I painted you
and I named it Grief

Breathe
and pray God will forgive,
wash the old names
from the blackened sand, laugh
as the flimsy constellations flicker

I’ll paint your portrait
and call it
Life.

When I was writing this, I did not focus on the meaning so much as how the words sounded, so the poem is intentionally vague. I love the rhythm that can be achieved with this kind of poetry.
