The alarm rings
at 6:30 am
Which rolls to 6:50
which crawls to 7

My eyes are glazed
From last nights episodes
I’m crumpled up
like a disappointing song

My author throws me off the couch
Into the garbage
I brush my yellowed teeth
Stained with diet soda
Everything Diet
“Be funny”

I hear the back door creek
With the creek I feel relief
She doesn’t see me but yells
Good morning ladies
“Be funny, make her day”

Why am I scared
that she won’t open it
That she won’t come home
One of these days
“Be funny, make everyone’s day”

The car warms
We wait for one more
She takes her time
And our day begins
“Be FUNNY!”

Caged in the metal desk
I sit and silent I become
“You’ll never be funny”
