before we knew
Before we knew…
We would
Stand out in the cold with our candy cigarettes
Giggle guiltily at our breath clouds
Scattering away
Cluelessly wondering what’s wrong with cigarettes anyway, making clouds is fun
We would
Sit in that hot pink sand box all day
Patting and mixing our little hearts out
Making enough mud pies to use up all the sand
Thinking if we could reach the oven we could make a real one no problem
We would
Look for pink or red crayons
Press them to our lips, feeling like a princess
swearing we could see the color
Asking why does lip gloss taste so good if it’s not meant to be snacked on
We would
Put all the blue pixie sticks into a bundle
Dump them into the glass
Stir frantically pretending it tasted good
Making excuses for why it never turned out like the Kool-Aid
One day, that came too soon
Candy cigarettes and pixie sticks would turn into cavities
That sandbox wouldn’t be mine anymore
I would hate having lip gloss on
And be looking back,
missing those days that are now far gone
and being able to make fun with dirt
