The Last Time
This is the last time, I promise.
I’ll put your picture away; I know it’s not worth my time.
I kept telling myself to hold on, but the time has come to finally let go.
I know you’re gone, you’re not coming back.
But I dreamt of you last night, that sweet time we shared.
We drove with the music up and the windows down.
Your eyes were on the road, but mine were on you.
The warm night time summer air would blow through my hair.
You laughed without a thought while I had to think to remember how to breathe.
Everything seemed so easy; your words came out effortlessly.
Those perfect little phrases stay inscribed in my mind, just like every time your hand touched mine.
Then I woke up and for that split second I smiled, until I remembered it’s not real any more.
I broke my word,
I took the picture out of my drawer and stared at all the memories it held.
This is the last time, I promise.
