Best Friends Forever
A girl and a boy dig in the sand, making dinosaur nests,
They know if they dig deep enough they’ll pop up in ‘The Land Before Times’,
Happily they throw sand at each other,
Promising to be,
Best friends forever,
Years later and he is going to a different school,
They meet up on odd weekends to climb into a half built tree house,
They complain about spending a whole hour on homework,
And try not to fall from laughing so hard,
Best friends forever,
Their play dates have dwindled to a halt;
She hasn’t seen him in a year,
Still when she speaks of friends,
His name is always there,
Best friends forever,
First day of high school and they pass each other in the halls,
Eyes meet,
Then break away,
They walk on,
Best friends forever?
She ends up alone in her classes, friendless and shy,
He walks in and she sits up straighter, her hand slightly raised in hope,
His eyes skim the classroom; they skim right over her,
Smiling he sits by one of his other friends and the hand goes down,
Best friends forever,
She watches him walk past her every day in the halls
And wonders,
How had he forgot what she never could,
A childhood promise,
Best friends forever.
