The One Who Came in First
Hear the ring of the mighty whistle
The cold breeze blowing on bare backs
Standing on the rough diving blocks
In a lane called 4
-swimmers take your mark-
All focus on the cold water
Dead silence then BEEP
Launch as far as I can
straining every muscle possible
SPLASH strait into the water
Shock of cold as I surrender to the water
Slowly blowing bubbles underwater
Quick little dolphin kicks
Trying hard to get as far as possible
Lungs dying out quickly
Time to take the first stroke
Gasping for air as the stroke goes by
Looking for the other swimmers
I have succeeded in being in first so far
Keeping my eye on the prize
every muscle in my body keeps pushing on
Never stop keep going
Awareness of the crowds kicks in
GO GO GO the team screams
Hit the wall and LAUNCH
No time to stay on the wall
Another swimmer is catching up
Trying to get their first
Kicking and moving my arms as fast as possible
Start to see the cross at the end
Gulp in the chlorine water but still push on
The end is clear now and only a few strokes left
Reaching for the wall and touch
I have made it
Grabbing the wall and SLAM
The rest of my body follows
The whistle blows again signalling to get out
Look at the scoreboard look for the lane and
It says it clear as day
-Lane 4- and under the column place
Number -1-
