The rain kissed the sidewalk
The lady kissed the man
The bartender used new chalk
And the man took her hand

They left and the door
Kissed the rubber stopper to seal
The draft from the floor
Behind the lady’s red heels

Daddy kissed the glass
And winced from the burn
The color of brass
My dead mother’s urn

Mommy hugged him close
Each day before work
He uses a dose
He drinks where she lurks

The lady walks in
Forgetting her purse
Daddy notices the thin
Legs of the nurse

Who spoke to him on
The night that she passed
Down a hill, in a pond
Where no lights ever flashed

She gives him a glance
A sorry look in her eyes
And leaves in a hurry
Her date waiting outside

I guess it’s fine
That we’re in this bar
And mommy died
In our old beat up car

Because Daddy’s a man
He’ll sober up soon
And later he’ll demand
That I wake him by noon

He’ll kiss the wind
Where mommy’s lips were
And again kiss the glass
Of a drink that’s been stirred

Dissolving the kisses
Of ten months ago
When Mommy and Daddy
Were “taking it slow”

Then he’ll find
A new place to work
Where Mommy’s green eyes
Won’t dare to lurk

And when we’re done in
This smelly old bar
Maybe we’ll trade-in
That old rugged car

For a new life perhaps
With a new Mommy for sure
Daddy won’t take naps
Or speaks words that are slurred

Happy and healthy
Our heads held high
Clean and wealthy
Forgetting she died.

The author's comments:
This piece was inspired by a lot of books I have read in which the father spends a lot of time in the bar while the boy feels that he should heed to that example. There's a different ending to mine because there is no real ending. It's up to interpretation and was inspired by "Angel's Ashes" and "A Death in the Family"
