Most people think
Roses are the women
Of the world
There to only symbolize love
And provide beauty

But do they know
That this is only
The red roses of the garden
So if you have any sense
Wish to be a white rose

Perhaps you think roses
Are not the flower you
Want to be
Understandable
Not everyone has the strength to be a rose

A white rose in particular
Requires a strong mind
An iron will and golden heart
They are the strongest of the garden
So wish to be a white rose

Their stems stand tall
And while they look innocent
They will only break after
The hardest storms
Have snapped their stalks

But from the roots
Others will grow
To carry on their legend
Do you want to be remembered?
Wish to be a white rose

The thorns they hide
Are sharp and subtle
They will cut you deep
At any cost
If you try to pick them

But otherwise they are kind
Wanting to do right
They are the flowers that will stand
After the rest have fallen
Wish to be a white rose

Have you ever tried to cut a white rose?
Tried to rob the world of something
Pure?
You will regret the loss
Of beauty and truth

There are many flowers in the garden
But only one stands tall
After the storms
So if you have any sense in your head
Wish to be a white rose

The author's comments:
This piece was inspired by Sophie Scholl and the other members of the White Rose organization who fought against the Nazis in WWII. Their contributions to freedom and justice will never be forgotten and this poem is in memory of their bravery. Because only the bravest can be a white rose.
