bracing
"i love you"
 sounded warmer in winter
 when our tongues were frozen
to the roofs of our mouths
 and we had to work
 to get words out

 to melt
 under the blankets
when it got dark at five
 and we had the excuse
 to sleep longer

to intertwine until we were one
 until we were warm

i think i loved you most
when i couldn’t feel my toes
and you had to warm them
 with yours

when you were through with me,

i was already used to the cold.
