A Late Summer's Evening

Sitting beneath the great oak
My back nestled against its sturdy trunk
I glance up and watch
The leaves fluttering above my head
Outlined against the darkening blue sky
They quiver and twirl
Like clusters of butterfly silhouettes
Dancing together in a sweet, graceful waltz.
In my ears I can feel
A constant humming
The intermittent buzzing of cicadas
Vibrating all around me
As they trill and whir
Resonating together in an unceasing, frenzied chorus.
A fragrant scent fills the air
Taking a deep breath, I smell
The aroma of fresh cut grass and smoky barbecue
From every direction
Swirling around me like tangled ribbons
Mingling together in a sweet, calming blend.
Closing my eyes,
I sense myself
Drifting off
Feeling the cool, tranquil breeze
Its gentle,
rhythmic
strokes,
Softly caressing my skin…
