She wakes me in the morning.
Oh Marilyn shut up.
You’re being too loud. I must silence you.
I reach for a pillow and place it over you.
I smile as you get quieter and quieter,
being muffled by the pillow.
I lift the pillow and watch your light dim.
I smile and go back to sleep.


The author's comments:
Elena uses personification in this poem for understanding. She was talking about her phone waking her up in the morning. She named her phone Marilyn and was able to use personification. She figured everyone has those mornings where the alarm won’t shut up and you just need five more minutes of sleep, and you feel like smothering your phone. She wrote as if it was a person. Elena isn’t a murderer though.
